KYMEA supplies its All Requirements members through a diverse portfolio of energy resources, including solar, natural gas, coal, and hydroelectric power. This balanced approach helps support reliable service, competitive costs, and greater protection from changing market conditions.

When KYMEA developed its initial power supply portfolio, the Agency secured resources designed to meet member needs while delivering significant wholesale power cost savings compared with the members’ previous supply arrangements.

Today, KYMEA continues to evaluate a wide range of resource options based on fuel type, technology, size, timing, location, cost, and risk. By maintaining a disciplined and diversified portfolio, KYMEA works to provide stable, cost-effective power while supporting reliability, environmental responsibility, and the long-term energy needs of its member communities.

Future Plans

KYMEA is developing the 75 MW Energy Center I power plant in Madisonville, Kentucky. The facility will consist of four Wärtsilä 18V50SG reciprocating internal combustion engine generators, each with a nominal output capacity of 18.8 MW. Designed for both continuous and peaking service, the plant will support the Agency’s power supply portfolio with flexible natural gas generation. Construction began in April 2025, and commercial operation is currently planned for summer 2027.
